I’m a little behind on my weddings (on the blog at least), but I was working on Derek & Summer’s wedding today and came across this:
I love this shot of Summer… So elegant…
The little dressing room had two light sources. One large soft light and some overhead lighting. Kind of a recipe for disaster although at least they were the same temperature (tungsten lighting), but Summer just happened to be in the right place, turning just the right way, for the light to land on her perfectly. I turned the flash off and used available light.
But it made me think; I gotta get a model to do this in a controlled environment. Maybe with a haze of cigarette smoke or something. Can you see it?
Anyway, Derek & Summer’s wedding pictures are coming soon.
I’m working through Saturday’s wedding and I remember walking by and being momentarily blinded by sunlight. I stopped and looked but quickly realized that I liked the light, but nothing else.
So I shot it completely out of focus just to see what the light might tell me.
Right now as I look at it, for some reason, the following words come to mind:
“Light in its indiscernible form”
I think I should do more of this.
I forgot to write it as such, but that last post was actually Day 268/365. So today, I start with Day 269/365 in what will hopefully be the last segment and exciting conclusion to the Broken Screen Trilogy.
I’m still trying to attach Spielberg as the director for it but we’ll see.
Trilogies are psychologically satisfying. They are the basic building blocks to any good story.
Beginning, middle and end. Exciting introduction, obstacle, resolution.
You could condense a movie trilogy’s story structure into a single movie as long as you keep its three act structure and it wouldn’t lose anything except the extensive details that allow Hollywood to milk as much money out of a franchise as they possibly can. But money aside, the three act structure is as old as time. Ok the Greeks came up with it but whatever. Go read up on Aristotle
Here’s the story arc to my little adventure:
Act 1, I received my new monitor and started setting it up. Exciting Introduction!
Act 2, I found out it was defective. Obstacle! RAWR!!
Act 3, I received an email from HP saying they’d send a replacement. Resolution!
Ball’s in your court Mr. Spielberg! I envision a $700 million budget with me in the lead role. I’ve instructed my imaginary agent to ask for $699 million of that. Good luck making a movie for a million bucks.
Day 269/365
The big monitor box, sitting there waiting for its replacement to arrive, while its two significantly smaller friends hang around in the background (iPhone photo)

Day 270/365
After a tiring downtown shoot, I went up to Ensign Peak to relax and enjoy the view. I only managed 2 shots with my iPhone before I was caught.
I really love this shot. Anonymous, natural and best of all, peaceful (iPhone photo)

Day 271/365
Ben & Liz

Day 272/365
I actually shot maternity pictures that day, but the subject insisted I didn’t post any pictures online. Oh well. Lightpost in a parking lot (iPhone photo)

For those of you who missed the post from the other day, here’s a reminder.
Day 85/365

Day 86/365
As the title implies, I worked with Dani again. We’d actually planned the shoot for that day (the 7th) weeks ahead of time, while the one from a few days back (the 4th) was last minute. That’s my excuse at least.
I tried doing some natural light stuff and it really didn’t work out… Like, at all… It’s making me want to get to the point where I can do it well, so I’ll probably try again in the future.

And then I turned my lights back on… Ahhhhh… The control…

Day 87/365
I honestly didn’t think Quincy was gonna show up! Communication had been touch and go, but I was glad when I heard a knock on my door.

Also from that day, I took this shot of my cologne… Why? Because I was in my bathroom getting ready, I look down to my cologne and then realize… I have the most pretentious, arrogant cologne on the planet!

I promise, I really just bought it because I liked how it smelled!
Day 88/365
I’ve never bought a Seventeen Magazine in my life. That day, I did. And that’s because I’ve been published in it! Woohoo!!

Look for this photo in Seventeen’s May issue, which I shot in the summer of last year:

Day 76/365
Tic, toc, tic, toc.
I really wanted to do this one back when I was shooting NURF Wars.

Day 77/365
The light pole across the street snapped in half the night before I took this. I never heard it break, and I certainly didn’t think the winds were so strong as to snap a light pole clean in half!
My little boy Mason and I went out with our cameras to take some shots.

Day 78/365
Showing off the business cards. Why? Because I’m replacing my wedding-related business card with a new one.
Out with the old:

In with the new:

And the other two, just for good measure:

Day 79/365
Models I’m going to be working with. Hopefully soon. I did a casting call at a local talent agency to try and recruit more male models to work with.
I’m especially excited to work with Pat, the first and oldest of the three. He has the most interesting face ever. Just this quick snapshot is kinda cool!

Oh and if Pat looks familiar, it’s because he was the farmer in the very successful Napoleon Dynamite movie.

Day 80/365
My son’s bike chain. It was late and I was hurrying to take something before midnight. I’d almost forgotten to take one that day. But so I was rushing, snapped this real quick, looked at it and thought “Wow… Cool”

Day 81/365
My guitar picks.

A bridal and two female model shoots coming up next.
Stay tuned!
Day 16/365
I’ve always liked these light paintings people do on Flickr. So I finally tried my hand at it.
And no, I’m not apologizing for the cheese factor. I have feelings too, you know.
