Not a terrorist! hahaha

I am a Photographer. Not a terrorist.

I am a Photographer. Not a terrorist.

This may be a repeat for my Facebook friends, but the T-Shirt made me laugh so hard and cheer so much that I decided almost instantly to buy it. It’ll be here in a couple weeks :)

Photographers have been receiving increasing pressure from over-zealous security guards and police officers not to take photographs in public places, despite it being perfectly legal. I’ve been confronted by this on just a few, though pretty intimidating occasions and it’s left a mark.

But more than that, I like to joke that I’m a terrorist. Why? Because nothing, and I mean NOTHING, could be further from the truth.

The notion that I’m a terrorist is so far beyond absurd that casting myself as one always gets me a laugh. It also tends to break down the uneasiness many might feel (especially in Utah where there’s not very many of us Arabs) when I tell them I’m from the Middle-East.

Them: “Where are you from?”
Me: “I’m from Lebanon. It’s in the Middle-East”
Them: “Oh… Cool…”
Me: “Don’t worry, I’m not gonna blow you up.”

Laughs all around, followed by great conversation.

Here’s Tom & Angela on their big day

I don’t know how to pronounce his last name in English, only in French (literal translation = The Mountain), but I have a feeling I’m gonna be buying a lot of this dude’s music pretty soon. Amazing, amazing stuff.

He’s even more impressive live… Like, WAY more impressive. That’s extremely rare.

Can’t stop listening to the song below, “Jolene”. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

ps: Discovered this gem by accident at the end of the 3rd brilliant movie this year; The Town. Go see it!

Hanging out with my friends always makes me happy. Here are some shots from my visit to the Utah State Fair, which closed yesterday when we went.

And yes, that banner really does say “Deep Fried Chocolate Covered Bacon on a Stick”. That’s a lot of words…

They should shorten it to “Suicide on a Stick”.

I KNEW I’d forgotten something important!!

The following photo booth series of images embodies how we all were on this most awesome of road trips. It was supposed to be at the end of Part 2 but I forgot. We all had tons and tons of goofball fun!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:

Best. Road trip. Ever.

As promised, here is the second and final part to my recent road trip to LA.

I have to admit that I’m not in the same mood I was in yesterday when I posted Part 1. I was in a much happier place then. Last night and most of today has been a painful struggle. Suffice it to say that… Well, I suppose some people just don’t have a heart…

But thinking back at this trip, the quiet moments of contemplation, the peace, the smell of the ocean water, the sand between my toes, the sound of the crashing waves, the inescapable awe for the architecture, and best of all, my friends Brittany and Lizel, together with all the jokes we made and the laughs we had; that helps.

Because it reminds me that there are still wonderful things to behold in this world and that there are still good people. There are still great memories to be made.

So here’s to you Brittany and Lizel, for making this vacation the best I’ve ever had.

Some of you seem to have enjoyed my randomness a while back, so here’s something random, though possibly somewhat predictable:

I adore the movie Inception.

Absolutely adore it.

I haven’t felt this excited about a movie since The Matrix came along. Whoever coined the phrase “everything has already been done” was ignoring the fact that wonderment and fresh ideas could still originate from what we know.

The Matrix took a boatload of old ideas and still managed to come across as if nobody had ever so much as imagined the concept they laid out in the film. I mean, machines rising up against their creators? That’s The Terminator isn’t it? As for the alternate reality aspect of it, seems to me we’ve seen every permutation of an alternate reality from The Wizard of Oz to Lord of the Rings.

So yes, “it’s all been done before.” They just mashed together two well-known concepts and decided to make a movie out of it.

But if the quality of a movie or even an idea, doesn’t depend on whether or not it’s been done in the past, it’s the story that matters.

And as with any good movie, with Inception, story is the undisputed king.

And really, everything takes a backseat to the story in this film.

EVERYTHING.

You can talk to me about how cool the effects were, you can cheer at the filmmakers’ choice to cast DiCaprio in it and how great he turned out for the role, you can rave about the score or the lighting, but make no mistake, in the end, it was the story that took it all.

The brilliant execution of everything surrounding the story was what made it shine. If you compare all the elements of Inception like the score, the acting, the lighting, and so on, to a knight’s armor, then the goal is to keep the armor from showing any cracks or vulnerabilities…

So long as you don’t forget that the armor is only there to protect the true essence of what’s actually being marveled at.

You don’t marvel at the armor.

You marvel at the knight.

The armor becomes almost irrelevant. It’s just a shell to help make him appear more fierce than he would without it.

And just the same, despite being well shielded by a terrific score, amazing visual effects, great acting and beautiful cinematography, it’s the story that we marvel at.

Now, I’ve heard a lot of people just blurt out how much of a trip the film was. “Wow, dude, trippy movie!”

To me, that’s almost an insulting oversimplification.

Yes, without giving anything away, there are a lot of elements to the story that are mind-bending and out of this world. But to reduce such brilliance to a “trippy movie” likens it to any other forgettable experience.

And that’s just not right.

Because despite having seen this film all the way back on July 16th, on the very day it came out, it still haunts me. I haven’t seen it since but I think I’ll be going again soon. In the meantime though, I believe it’s hands down, HANDS DOWN, the best film of 2010.

But I’m gonna go much further and say that I think Inception will, or at least should go down as one of the greatest films of all time. It nailed the story every step of the way. No surprise twists and turns or weirdness just for the sake of itself. Just brilliant cinema throughout.

Please, don’t turn it into a franchise. Never make a sequel to it. Or a prequel. Or a TV show. One of the all-time movie greats deserves better than that.

I can only hope that someday I can produce something with as much storytelling brilliance as Inception managed to do.

It’s been far, FAR too long since I last went on a road trip.

A proper road trip.

And there’s no way I could have gone had it been scheduled for even as little as a few weeks earlier.

Plus, I could feel myself burning out on wedding season about a month ago, so I’m glad it was my good friend Brittany’s 30th birthday on September 12th (Happy Birthday!!). She grew up in LA, oh and Disneyland is in LA, so naturally, she chose LA as the destination, invited me and Lizel, one of her friends (now also one of MY friends), to come along.

We were only there for a weekend, with two full days spent driving and being within close quarters in my little Civic. Technically I think that’s asking for trouble :)

But oh the fun we had! Every picture I’m posting, even the ones I’m not, have a story of their own. Maybe next time I could have another dude come along though. You know, just to balance things out a little.

Still, it’s no contest…

Best.

Road trip.

EVAR!!!

First we settled into the hotel after an 11-hour day on the road…

Then we headed out for some grub. Lizel was so excited for Sunday’s trip to Disneyland that she pulled out the map and started planning.

Then on the last day, Disneyland! Now, I’m not a huge fan (I much prefer Six Flags so I can be flung three miles into the atmosphere at twice the speed of sound), but in great company, everything is fun, and Disneyland was no exception.

I’ll be posting my favorite day of the road trip tomorrow, with beaches, architecture and good-old-fashioned weirdness, so stay tuned for that!

The happy couple:

I’ll be honest. Death has been a great big part of my life. I’d say it’s hit close to home, but that would be a lie.

It hit home.

Twice.

So although I’m not one of those people who has some obscene fascination with death, it’s certainly something I’ve been intimately exposed to.

In fact, we’ve all had our brushes with death, whether by our own experiences (I fell through a roof once when I was about 15 – I remember not being able to breathe and thinking “I can’t breathe anymore. This is it. I’m gonna die.”) or because we knew people who died.

And I do want to point something out. I don’t like to filter the language in describing death. I don’t say “passed away” or “went to a better place”.

It’s death! It’s not supposed to be pleasant or easy to say. It’s tragic and it’s painful.

And so, with all of that comes the narrative of this series. The idea came to me in November of 2009 and I immediately knew I wanted to illustrate the quiet and lonely suffering we all endure when confronted with the death of a loved one.

Many thanks to Kari Hawker (model), Ashlen Saunders Duke (hair stylist), Shanda Palmer from FaseItMakeup (makeup artist) and AultoRest Memorial for allowing us to shoot there!!
