This is the project I’ve been excited to unveil since I first thought it up about a month ago. “Finally!!”, I can hear several say. In fact, these same people were probably some of my first subjects too.

And they haven’t read so much as two words from that first paragraph… They’re down below checking out their pictures of themselves!

Aaaaaand welcome back guys :)

Ok, so here’s the idea for this project:

I can’t tell you how often I hear friends, acquaintances, brides, wedding guests, random people to whom I reveal that I’m a photographer, say that they’re not photogenic.

It’s a load of crap.

Nobody is not photogenic.

The trouble actually lies, no offense, with your friends. Your friends aren’t used to being photographers, so they rarely understand light, composition, context, character, editing, even more rarely shoot in any mode besides Auto and then don’t enhance the images once they’re out of the camera. I don’t mean enhancing in Photoshop either, I mean adjusting things like color, exposure; things like that.

So whenever someone would say to me “I’m not photogenic”, my response was always the following:

“You’re wrong. Gimme 5 minutes and I’ll prove it to you.”

Finally, instead of just saying it every time I heard it, I decided it was time to do a few things.

First of all, to provide those who think they’re not photogenic with images of themselves that they can actually be happy with, hopefully breaking the usually deep-rooted belief that they’re no good in front of a camera.

But as I thought this, I realized it would also be deeply interesting, for me at least, to document what my circle of friends looks like. Who are they? What do they do? What are they passionate about? What are their quirks? And why the hell CAN’T they make a face when confronted with a camera?!

Before long I came to the conclusion that… Well… Why limit this to just my friends? I hear the photogenic complaint from everyone! I wanna include them too.

And once the project became about EVERYONE… Well things got complicated for me. I had to figure out how I’d do this without killing myself in the process.

Now, I know this isn’t groundbreaking photography by any stretch of the imagination, but this is something I care about. It’s the only reason for it to exist.

Here’s my start with a few of my friends, followed by the “rules” of my game so you can be part of this too :)

Dani, showing off her gum:

Bina really resisted this:

No shot of either Dani or Bina would be complete without the other in it. These two are best of friends and are completely inseparable:

Brittany’s hobby is… You guessed it; photography. She’s also a terrific painter:

Lisa is one of my closest friends. She has a false reputation for being short-tempered. She’s just loud sometimes, so I asked her to scream at me:

Strangely, although Lisa and I are very close, Bruce and I always talk the most when I go hang out with them:

Believe it or not, everyone in the pictures above felt they weren’t photogenic… I’d like to think I did SOMETHING to improve how they feel about that. Speaking of which, if there’s an image here of you, please give me your email address so I can send you everything I thought was good. Email me or talk to me on Facebook.

Ok, now for the “rules”, in no particular order:

– You can be anyone. Past/future client, acquaintance, friend; I don’t care. Zero restrictions here. You can even have me take pictures of someone you know.

– The shoot will last no more than about 5 minutes.

– I’ll be posting at least one, but a maximum of two images of my choosing on the blog. One will be a portrait of just you, but in the other I want something that is kind of representative of you. This can be anything, I just wanna see the real you. Make a face, show me your hobby, invite someone that means a lot to you, bring something of great personal value, show off your favorite tattoo, etc. I’m open to anything. I just wanna see the real you somehow.

– I’ll be needing your email address so I can send you the results (especially if I feel that we ended up with more than 2 good ones – already the case above) and you’re welcome to download the images from the blog as well of course. Make sure to click on the images so you can get the larger versions if you take them from the blog.

– The images won’t be Photoshopped at all

– Delivery of the images will be at 640 pixels tall or 640 pixels wide, depending on whether the shot is vertical or horizontal.

– I need you to meet me around the Salt Lake City area UNLESS I happen to be visiting your state or country… Sorry people from Pakistan, I can’t fly half-way across the world for a 5-minute shoot!

– We shoot where we meet. No extensive location scouting. The pictures above were shot in a parking lot and a house, so clearly locations don’t matter much in this project’s case anyway.

– I will ONLY shoot using my Canon 85mm f1.2 L lens, with which I am deeply in love. And I’ll probably always be shooting wide-open too (for those of you who know what that means).

– I haven’t yet determined a time-limit on this project, if any.

– If there are any photographers out there who are able and willing, could you do the same for me?! I hate every recent picture of myself that I have… :)

That’s it! Email me or add me on Facebook if you’d like to get in closer contact with me so we can more easily arrange a shoot!

Enis (pronounced Eh-niss) and Whitney were a joy to work with. Total goofballs and really comfortable with themselves.

So much so that when I had to run back to my car to grab something and come back, they took a smoke break. I asked if I could shoot them smoking and they said sure. I know it’s a nasty habit, they know it’s a nasty habit, and I’m sorry, but I don’t care; I love shots of people smoking – wedding or not. There’s something I find really interesting about it and if you dig deep enough, you’ll find some of my work with models smoking.

LOVE that shot of this couple! Let’s show a little character!

My new project FINALLY gets unveiled tomorrow! It’s one that’s very near and dear to my heart, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I’m excited to share it with you all.

WARNING: PHOTOGRAPHER’S RANT! This is aimed primarily at other photographers, but of course all are welcome.

First of all, the title will explain itself as you read, but good luck labeling another photographer as Arab AND a communist. That combo doesn’t come along very often. Must be the end of the world.

Second…

Look, photographers; I get it.

We’re all fighting really hard just to stay afloat, let alone make it anywhere. We’re all fighting over the same slice of pie in our respective markets, not to mention the slice isn’t even looking so good anymore (Newsweek was sold for an unbelievable $1 recently – yes there’s much more to it than that, but it’s still an indication of the times).

On top of that, EVERYONE is a photographer now. We feel this especially on the wedding side of the business for those of us who shoot them. I can’t tell you how often I’ve seen guests with a $2,000 lens (just like mine) hooked onto a camera body for another $4,000 (just like mine).

Convincing brides that the difference between them and me is experience has become a tough sell, although more often than not I seem to be losing work to the photographer who has a grand total of $800 worth of equipment. And brides, if you’re reading this, I don’t care if your guests take pictures; let them take more than I do!

But even with all this…

I do not get why photographers choose to hoard whatever they know.

How insecure do you feel about your work that you think the first schmuck to come along and do what you do will take away all your business?!

Location scouting is the first thing that comes to my mind, and just yesterday, I was out securing a cemetery location in Ogden for an upcoming shoot, so I decided that it would be a good time to check out Union Station a bit more closely than I had before. After all, I rarely make it up to Ogden.

So I wander around and yeah it’s great, but then I came across this:

And I realized that I’d finally found the location that another photographer, about a year ago, sternly refused to tell me anything about… BUT! I’m not gonna share the location to spite that photographer.

I’m gonna share the location because I’m not worried about what it’ll do to my business or to the body of my work.

I’m told this is a popular spot for photography, so this may be old news for many living in Ogden, but for those who may be starting out or those who just don’t get up to Ogden that often, it’s right by Union Station, on the north-west side, across from the bus station platforms. All of that is on the corner of 23rd Street and Wall Avenue.

There.

But hey, as long as I’m ranting about some photographers NOT sharing, how about I put my money where my mouth is and DO share some locations that help make my work stand out a bit?

Well here you go. Here’s some work I’ve done along with their locations (I’m purposefully leaving out locations that I gained access to as a favor, or happens to be someone’s house, etc., but you’re welcome to email me and ask if you’re curious – photographers, clients, I don’t care):

Hill Aerospace Museum: 7961 Wardleigh Rd., Hill AFB, UT. You have to take care not to expose any of the surroundings or it’ll kill the illusion of being by real planes:

Clear Vista Circle, off of 5400 S., past the train tracks headed west. There’s a lot of industrial crap all around there, which is why I was shooting towards the sky on both shoots:

Spanish Fork Reservoir, all the way up Spanish Oaks Dr. You’ll have to Google it using Satellite View to see it. Crystal clear waters but relatively small:

“Toxic Barrels” as I like to call them. On 400 W. between 800 S. and 900 S. on the west side:

West of the Usana Amphitheater, the gated road just off curvy 6400 W. The road you’re looking at curves back towards the amphitheater (headed east):

Emigration Canyon Rd. You have to park your car where you’ve roughly reached the peak and are overlooking Little Dell Reservoir and hike up southbound past the power stations:

Right across my house! It looks different depending on the time of year. I’m about on the corner of 6115 W. and 7000 S. in West Jordan. At least stop by and say hello if you’re this close:

Willard Bay State Park. It’s north of Ogden, take the 750 N. exit and head west:

There. Done! Somebody come talk to me in a couple years. I’ll still be in business, hopefully with even some healthy growth to speak of.

And photographers, for cryin’ out loud, SHARE! Share what you know!

END OF RANT.

I’ll be posting some images later today of a recent wedding and then sometime this weekend I’m going to announce a new project that involves some major giving back to my community. Very excited about this one!

Here’s a portrait session of Clint, a fitness instructor that needed some updated shots of himself.

These are not the shots he used, these are just my personal favorites :)

Just days after their formals, Joe and Heather got married:

My Diana F+ finally broke…

I brought it along for a recent wedding and when I pulled it out to take some random shots I realized it was missing the front element of the lens… I have no clue where it went to. I had already loaded a roll in there so I wasn’t about to let it go to waste.

Here are some out-of-focus shots that will make you think I’m weird for bothering to post these at all.

Now I also have an excuse to buy a new Holga.

Enjoy!

Erneke is a friend of mine that I met for the first time 10 years ago back in Belgium (she’ll kill me if I don’t mention that she’s Dutch, NOT Belgian), just weeks before I came to Utah. We’d stayed in touch on and off during that time, until Facebook came along, at which point staying in touch was a breeze.

Her husband Rick is from Utah, so they come out and visit family from time to time, and they needed new family pictures, pictures of their kids and pictures of themselves.

It was wonderful seeing her again, and admittedly a bit of a shock to see her all grown up with a family of her own. The kids took a little bit to warm up to me, so I asked Erneke if I could speak Dutch to them. She said “sure”. So I proceeded to speak to them in their language and Erneke quickly pointed out that “Um, no. You’re speaking Flemish. That’s not Dutch.”

Psh…

Well ok she was right, but whatever. They could understand me :)

Formal session just days before their wedding:

In the last little while, especially in the last couple of weeks, I’ve fallen behind too far for my taste… And two weeks to fall behind in the middle of summer is an eternity.

So in the COMING two or three weeks, I’ll be working my butt off to catch up on the blog among many, MANY other areas of my varied work. One of my goals will be to finally launch my efforts to move to beautiful New York City :)

I’ve mentioned this on my Facebook profile and I want to repeat it here, ’cause I own this here blawg: “I live in Salt Lake City. I live in my house… But I wanna go home.”

It’s a strange thing to still not be able to call Salt Lake City my home… I’ve lived here almost 10 years! But when I really feel like I’m going home, I’m thinking about Belgium or Lebanon. Now, I wanna live in the states, and I think I’ll have no issues calling New York my home.

Ok, here we go: here’s Tim & Carrie’s wedding!
